JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 27 July 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 26 July 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The north shore was the best fishing area last week where patterns such as the Bibio Hopper, CDC Hopper, Sedgehog, Mini Sedge and the Muddler were all accounting for good baskets. Those doing well amongst the individual anglers included Kenny MacMillan from Perth who kept 6 fish weighing 12lb, Alastair MacMillan, Comrie, and & Brian Thorn, Glen Devon, 9 fish weighing 20lb 8oz and released 4, Neil Robertson, Edinburgh, took 5 fish for 10lb 4oz and George Keith & Tam Langdown from Dunfermline had 3 fish weighing 6lb 8oz and released 12. On the club front Roslin British Legion A/C kept 25 fish weighing 50lb 12oz, Penicuik A/C 42 fish for 90lb, Tillicoultry A/C 24 fish for 52lb and Ayr Travellers A/C kept 37 fish weighing 78lb and released a further 55.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The recent heavy rains have helped clear the ponds leaving the water in prime condition. The local Osprey must have realised this as it has visited us most days. Once the water had cleared the Boathouse fished superbly, especially on Friday. Mr. Fleming took 4 rainbows for 10lbs and returned a further 10 fish. Mr. Purvis had 3 for 9lbs 8oz and released 23. Other good catches included Mr. Noble’s four fish for 10lbs 8oz and 16 released and Hugh Bairner had four for 21lbs with the best going 9lbs 8oz. Several other decent fish were returned by various anglers. Nymphs, Dries and Damsels have been amongst the most successful patterns. A variety of methods have been working on the Burnside with Dries, Buzzers and Lures retrieved quickly being the best. Mr. Stuart had two for 6lbs and returned 8; Mr. Whyte released 11 including one estimated at 7lbs and Mr. Gowans released 15 all caught on a Damsel. There has been a lot of surface activity on the Bankside and anglers have responded by using dries and Floating Fry patterns. Frank Sherriff released 15 and Mr. Jones took two for 7lbs with a further 11 released. Limited bait fishing is still being trialled on this pond and Powerbait has been by far the most productive method with Mr. Mills taking four fish for 12lbs including a rainbow of 6lbs 8oz. The any legal method pond, the Woodside has fished well, especially on Powerbait with 39 anglers taking 73 fish for 116lbs over the weekend.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Last week the heaviest fish – a rainbow of 10lbs was caught on a dry by Jimmy Anderson from Portobello and included in a catch of 5 fish. R Dempster from Edinburgh took a 6lb fish on a Silver Sedge, Alex Rowley, Dalkeith, had 5 on a Shuttlecock, Stewart McLaughlin, Penicuik 6 on Buzzers and William Mckenzie from Dalkeith to 3 on a CDC Shuttlecock. 4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Last week the fish have been taking anything from dries to lures of all colours mostly on the top or just under the surface. Those doing well last week included Tony Hingley from Alloa who had 4 fish for 12lbstook 4 for 14lbs on a Hare Ear, Jimmy Young, Alloa, 3 for 8lbs on Buzzers, Ronnie Stanovich, Glasgow, 3 for 10lbs on a Hare’s Ear and Robert Chapman from Linlithgow caught 4 fish for 12lbs 8oz on a Goldie. Thompson, High Valleyfield, took 3 fish for 12lbs on Wets.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Another week of cool weather with some very heavy showers led to some good fishing conditions although many anglers are getting fed up of being cold and wet in July. Water temperature is around 13oC and the clarity is generally very good. The fish are still in the top 2 feet of the water and nearer the surface on the small ponds. A fast retrieve is working well just under the surface with favourite patterns being Dancer, Damsel, Buzzer, Diawl Bach, Viva, Hare’s Ear, PTN, Hopper and Sedge. Although fish are to be found all round the main pond, the hotspots were the dam and the boat corner with Browns and Tigers preferring the burn mouth and bridge area. Catch of the week was Nan Morrison’s 3 Browns for 12lb 4oz including a cracking 6lb 4oz specimen which she reckoned she hooked twice! Nan was fishing at the mouth of the burn and hooked into a big brown which managed to throw the hook and escape. She then moved to the other side of the bridge, hooked and landed a smaller brown then hooked into and kept hold of the 6lb 4oz one which she was almost certain was the same fish as had got off earlier.

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The old favourites like the Ally McCoist, Yellow Dancer and the Cat’s Whiskers were the top flies last week but Buzzers and Dries are also doing well.
