Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 07 October 2019. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 06 October 2019.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The best catching flies last week included the White Tailed Okey Dokey, Coral & Yellow Dancer and the Ace of Spades whilst all areas continue to fish well. The following individuals did well fishing from the bank with James Barbour from Tayport keeping 2 fish weighing 5lb 8oz, Willie Johnson (Bannockburn) 4 fish for 9lb 8oz, Albert McKinnes (Tullibody) caught and released 6, Bobby Paterson (Stirling) 4 c/r and Raymond Pirrie from Tullibody caught released 5. Fishing from the boats Ian Buchan from Edinburgh kept 3 fish weighing 7lbs, Kenny Baird (Tillicoultry) 4 fish weighing 8lbs, IBM Freshwater A/C took 3 fish weighing 7lbs and the Wallyford A/C kept 9 fish weighing 18lbs.
2. ORCHILL TROUT FISHERY (Braco) The Falcon FFC had a good outing taking 30 fish for 76lbs with the heaviest basket going to Allan Morrison with 4 fish for 12lbs on an Ally. Live Line AC had 9 fish for 27lbs on Dries and Lures and the Wader AC from Edinburgh also had 9 fish for 24lbs 8oz. Also doing well was Brian Eadie from Stirling with 3 fish for 16 lbs - best a 7lbs Goldie, William Cumming (Tillicoultry) 1 fish for 6lbs on a Damsel, Errol Feighan (Bonnybridge) 4 fish weighing 10lbs on a Yellow Dancer and Tom Faulds from Lochgelly used an Ally to bag 3 fish for 11lbs. Richard Gracey from Kent took a fish of 3lbs on an Ally, Calum Clive (Airdrie) 1 fish for 8lbs on a Cat, Billy Docherty (Alloa) 2 fish for 6lbs on an Ally and Donald Blyth from Doune had 2 fish weighing 4lbs 8oz on a Gold Head Damsel. Last but not least Hamish Carmichael from Alloa caught a couple for 6lbs on a Coral Dancer.
Because there is so much natural feeding in the water right now the fish are being attracted by bright colours so flies and lures incorporating bright green, red, yellow and orange are all doing well. The Eagle Club from Tillicoultry had 10 fish for 36lbs 8oz with A Beverage having the top bag with 3 fish for 12lbs - best fish 6lbs on a Bloodworm. On Sunday, Alexander Buses had 21 fish for 53lbs 8oz - heaviest basket S Bennie with 4 fish 12lbs - best 4lbs 12oz on a Bright Green Buzzer, Ian Law (Paisley) 3 fish weighing 7bs 8oz on a White Fritz and Alistair Sangster from Blackford used a Damsel to take 2 for 5lbs.
Greg Lockhart from Dunblane caught a couple for 5lbs 8oz on Buzzers, G Frater (Stirling) 3 fish for 8lbs on the CDC and Damsel, Jim Linton (Moodiesburn) 8 fish for 21lbs on Blobs
and Hector Wilson from Bannockburn took 3 fish for 7lbs 8oz on an Okey Dokey.
3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Although the weather has been quite mixed these last two weeks, the ponds are in good condition and water-levels are excellent. On Saturday 05 October the fishery was delighted to host a fundraiser for the Scottish SANA Stillwater Team, raising £365 towards their cause. Nineteen anglers took part and released a total of 141 fish including three doubles, eight fish between 5lbs and 9lbs and a magnificent Brownie of 8lbs 8oz. Thanks to all who took part and congratulations to the top three; Willie Riddicks (13 fish), Andrew Barrowman and Greg McLaren.
The Boathouse Pool has generally responded well to Buzzers (Dennis the Menace or Olive), small dries, Yellow Owl, Sugar-Cubed Shipman’s or small Cormorant type lures. Mr. Thomas released 16 fish in a productive session and Mr. Heenan returned a dozen. Mr. Elder took a fine 8lbs 8oz rainbow and returned another seven fish. On Saturday 28 September six anglers released 45 fish.
Catches have been slightly erratic on the Burnside Pool but for those who have timed the feeding spells correctly there have been some fine returns in relatively short spells. Joe Westland certainly read conditions correctly to return 10 fish including two excellent rainbows estimated at 15lbs and 13lbs. James Smith and Mr. Barry released 9 fish each whilst Mr. McKinnie took four fish for a total of 12lbs.
The Bankside Pool has enjoyed some good dry fly and buzzer fishing. Frank Sherriff again excelled returning 12 fish, taken mainly on Buzzers. We were privileged to host Rosyth Civil Service AC on Sunday 29 September; they returned 71 fish for their outing. Mr. Murfazio enjoyed some brisk sport releasing 9 fish including a fine rainbow estimated at 10lbs.
Powerbait fished beneath a float has again been the best option on the Woodside Pool (any legal method) although spinning has produced some of the better fish. The McIntyre’s’ excelled on their outing catching eight fish including two superb rainbows which weighed 13lbs 12oz and 11lbs 4oz. The Campbell’s’ also found the right approach to land six fish for a combined weight of 11lbs and on Saturday 28 September 18 fish were taken for a combined weight of 38lbs 12oz.
This past week of hot weather here at Forbes of Kingennie is seeing a change in the fishes behaviour, as the water temperatures rise they have been a bit fussy at times but when the cloud comes over and cools down the sport at times has been outstanding. Different ponds have been fishing better at different times so moving around has been essential for constant results.
The Bankside pool has been the stand out pond these last few days with lots of anglers having great returns in sometimes trick conditions. The water has become very clear recently and really helped with the returns. Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at 5 feet. The washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when they have been very active. Mr Kirk had 12 fish and 13 fish in 2 consecutive trips on fabs, buzzers and diawls bachs. His best fish was estimated at around 12lb as well as others of 5 and 7lb. Mr Jones had 12 on black buzzers under and indicator. Mr Birse had 13 on a sugar cube shipman’s.
The Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible on the surface cruising around. The fishing has been a little bit slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. Again the more natural approach has taken more fish, The washing line with wee buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right conditions when they come up. Mr Westland had 21 on size 14 black buzzers and fabs. Mr Wilson had 2 for 6lb and put back 9 fishing diawl bachs.
The Boathouse has been a bit coloured but on the very sunny days it has been the best pond with huge amounts of fish taking off the surface in the shade. Mr Leslie had a great day returning around 20 fish on small dries and emerges. Mr Fulthorpe had a good morning landing 8 up to 7lb on a pink fab and diawl bachs. Mr Whiteford kept his 3 fish for 8lb and put back 6 on a damsel.
The Woodside pool has been really busy in the nice weather with many full bags being recorded. Green powerbait and spinners have been the top bait of late. Over the weekend there was a total of 37 anglers landed 68 fish for weight of 115lb.
4. MARKLE (East Lothian) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) As the autumn progresses the fishing continues to improve. Large numbers of Golds and Tigers are figuring in the catch returns from all three ponds. For much of the week the fish were in the top 2 to 3 feet of the water and could often be seen cruising round the ponds with the Golds especially visible. There were no particular hot spots although the dam and the channel were sometimes more productive than other areas. A fairly fast retrieve was the best tactic for attracting fish and a wide variety of flies were working with favourite patterns including Dancer Cat’s Whisker, Montana, Hare’s Ear, Damsel, Black Pennell, Buzzer, Bloodworm, Yellow Owl and other dry flies. On the bait pond maggots, mouse tails and various colours of power bait were all tempting fish. Now that the Brown Trout season is finished all Browns must be carefully returned. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 6.00pm
