JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Tuesday 13 Feb 2018. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 12 February 2018.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles). NOW CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2018

2. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It has been another quiet week with the snow and ice on Tuesday and Wednesday but by Saturday the water was fishing well with a wide variety of flies taking the fish. Jim Linton from Moodiesburn had 8 fish for 23lbs 8oz on the Wotsit and Damsel, K MacKinnon, Cowdenbeath, 2 fish weighing 6lbs 8oz on a Copper John, Ralph Hardie, Kinross, 4 fish for 12lbs on a Yellow Dancer and K Foster from Dunfermline used a Buzzer to take a brace weighing 5lbs.Bill Cook from Dunfermline had 1 fish for 2lbs 8oz on a Green Buzzer, Gerry Halas & Ian Cochran, Stirling 4 fish for 11lbs 8oz on a Yellow Wotsit and the Okey Dokey, D Ritchie, Stirling 2 fish for 6lbs on an Egg Fly and Brian Fernie from Kinross caught 3 fish for 8lbs on a Yellow Dancer.

 3. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The weather was a big factor in fishing returns again last week, with temperatures generally being very low and winds fairly high but Greg McLaren certainly found the correct method on the Boathouse to catch and release 16 rainbows. Mr. Burnett also did well returning 9 fish. Small flies were the preferred option, although several fish were caught on lures and even a couple on dry flies. The Burnside was variable again but there were still some excellent catch/release results. Greg McLaren also cracked the code for this pool, returning 13 fish, Ed Valentine released 13 and Ian Gordon returned 12. Angling pressure on the Bankside was quite low but George Birse managed to return 8 rainbows as did Mr. Breen. On the Woodside Pool (any legal method) the fishing was quite difficult but some decent returns were recorded, especially to Powerbait. Mr. Oakley had five fish for 9lbs; Mr. Clark took four fish for 8lbs 4oz; Nathan had four fish for 8lbs and Mr. Reid had three rainbows for 5lbs 8oz.

4. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a very quiet week due to the inclement weather but despite this Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had a notable visit taking 4 fish on Apps including specimens of 10lbs 2oz and 8lbs. Also doing well was Shaun McGarry from Edinburgh with 4 on Buzzers, Jackie Hay, Haddington, 4 on a Diawl Bach, Mark Anderson, Musselburgh 7 on Blobs, Paul Irwin, Edinburgh 3 on a Hot Head Damsel and the Scottish Fund Raiser saw 141 fish being caught and returned.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The continuing changes in weather have seen a mixed success rate for anglers. One really cold day in the middle of the week, with overnight temperatures down to -5 saw water temperatures drop and fish went slightly deeper and were harder to locate. The beginning and end of the week were milder and saw the air temperature rise as high as 8 degrees, meaning fish were more active, higher in the water. The fish continue to shoal predominately in the channel between the island and roadside, however on the milder days they were also found in the main area and towards the dam wall, with anglers in the boats having good success. Most catches were again had on lures, including Cat, Dancer, Ally McCoist and Damsel. The water remains exceptionally clear with anglers, on the calm days commenting on seeing fish well down in the water. Despite the low water temperatures some excellent Browns are also still being caught and released.
