Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 07 November 2016. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 06 November 2016.

1. FRANDY (Glendevon). The fishery is now closed for the 2016 season.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The colder weather has certainly reached Kingennie but the fishing has continued to produce some excellent results in all conditions except for the worst easterly winds. Conditions on the Boathouse Pool have been pretty much ideal, with excellent numbers of fish prepared to feed as they sense the colder weather coming in. Mr. Ramshaw released thirty, taken mainly on the “washing line” method. Two members of the Johnston party also enjoyed top quality sport returning thirty-seven fish between them. Mr. Faulkner also found the correct method to take four fish for 14lbs 8oz and release a further nine. The Burnside Pool was rather more moody but when the fish were on there were some superb catches taken. Mr. Robertson released thirty fish taken mainly on a Cat Bug fished beneath a bung. Meanwhile, Mr. Paton had three fish weighing a total of 8lbs and returned another twenty; Black Zonker was the taking fly. Powerbait and spinners have accounted for the best catches on the Woodside Pool (any legal method). Mr. Anderson landed seven rainbows for a total weight of 12lbs; Mr. Hogg took five fish for 9lbs 8oz,  Mr. McElhinney landed five for 9lbs  and Mr. Duncan took four fish for 7lbs 8oz. Repair work is now complete on the Bankside Pool and the water-level is coming back up steadily. It is hoped that the pool will reopen in December.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was a very quiet week due mainly to the extreme change in the weather. Father and son Tom Russell Snr. And Jnr. had a good visit sharing 21 on Buzzers, Neil Raeburn, Edinburgh, 3 on Buzzers, Bruce Hunter, Edinburgh, 10 on Bloodworm, Paul Harvey, Musselburgh, 4 on a Pink Blob and Chris McGhee from Musselburgh used a Rabbitiser to take 4.

4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) For the most part it has been a glorious week with dry sunny days and the fish have been mainly caught just under the surface to about 2 - 3 feet on a wide variety of flies with the Diawl Bach to all colours of Buzzers and lures doing well. Angus Drummond from Bridge of Allan had a brace for 13lbs – best 7lbs on a Cat, Mike Christie, Scone, 2 for 11lbs – best 6lbs on a Cat, Barry Hamilton, Glasgow, used an Ally McCoist to take 3 for 11lbs and R. Davy Black from Lochgelly used Buzzers to bag 3 for 9lbs and John Gilchrist, Stirling, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Cat.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) This week saw the first frost of the winter, but conditions remain really good and the fishing is excellent.   The water is very clear and fish, particularly Goldies, can be seen following and taking.   Most of the fish were in the top 2 feet of the water at the start of the week, but went a little deeper as the weather cooled towards the weekend and were to be found 2 to 4 feet down.   They are still well spread out and being caught all-round the main pond with the most productive areas being the dam and the island.  The catch returns feature a good number of fish in around 4lb to 5lb including several Golds.   Small lures or nymphs fished with a fast retrieve are the best tactic at present with favourite patterns being Dancer, Cat’s Whisker, Damsel, Montana, Hare’s Ear, Viva, PTN, Cormorant, Bloodworm and Buzzer.   On the small ponds, which are also fishing really well, some anglers were managing to tempt fish up to dry flies which is very unusual at this time of year. The Fishery is now open 8.00am to 5.00pm every day.
Alan Burke, Falkirk, took the biggest fish of the week in his 3 for 15lb including 10lb 2oz Rainbow and a Gold, Alec Knox, Glasgow, was also amongst the big fish with 3 for 15lb including 9lb Rainbow and a Gold, Alan Stirling, Bonnybridge, 5 for 19lb 8oz including 4 Golds, biggest one at 4lb 10oz, plus 7 C&R and Joe Malcolmson, Cumbernauld, 5 for 17lb including 2 Golds, bigger at 4lb 4oz and a Blue.
