JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 15 June 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 14 June 2015.

Hopkinson from Perth kept 7 fish weighing 17lb, Alastair MacMillan, Comrie, 3 fish weighing 7lb and Stuart Allan from Bannockburn kept 4 fish weighing 9lb.
The top taking flies and lures have included the Bibio Hopper, Olive Damsel, Sedgehog, Muddler and the Kate McLaren whilst the best fishing area is from the start of the Dogleg to the Dam Wall.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Summer appears to have finally arrived at Forbes of Kingennie after getting some hot sunny weather, this has led to a few substantial fly hatches resulting in some furious surface activity especially in the evenings, and there have been a lot of buzzers and the ever annoying caenis hatches. There have also been some really big hatches of ginger sedges that really get the fish chasing on top. Although there have been large numbers of fish moving in the upper layers they have not always been easy to catch and have provided some interesting but frustrating fishing. When they haven’t been on the surface you have had to go down deeper for them in the heat of the day.
The Bankside has been very good this week with a lot of anglers making the most of the fish being very active on the surface. Fish have been caught all over the pond but the dam wall seems to have fish there all the time. Mr Gordon had a superb run through the week landing 38 fish in 3 short sessions, mostly on a yellow lure and the Okey Dokey. Mr Sherriff has continued him good run of late taking 16 fish in a session on Hoppers and Mr Ross had a good day with 4 fish for 10lb 11oz and 8 returned on Orange Blobs. The Boathouse has been excellent this week with a couple of really good bags and lots of fish caught and released. Mr Thompson and Mr McCabe had a great afternoon landing 19 fish between them on a mix of lures and Buzzers - the biggest was around 4lb but they also lost one of the very big blues that refused to get caught. Yet get caught it did as regular angler Chris landed it on Sunday evening, unfortunately I’m not sure what he caught it on but it was just one of 10 fish landed. Mr McHardy also took a big fish on Saturday with a rainbow of 8lb 9oz in a bag of 3 for 15lb with 5 returned. The Burnside has had an unusual sort of off week with some anglers having superb results but some have really struggled. The fish seem to be either very high in the water looking for dries or down much deeper where sunk lines or the bung have been the best methods. Mr Simpson had a couple of very good evening with over 35 fish landed in 2 sessions. Mr Drummond had 4 for 13lb including a 6lb 5oz blue trout as well as returning 8 on a White Fritz. The Woodside has been very busy all this week, with loads of fish getting caught as well as some bigger than usual specimens. The biggest this week was taken by Mr Ramsden and his son with a 2lb 14oz rainbow in a bag of 4 for 9lb. Mr Whiteford had 4 for 9lb. Over the weekend there were 58 angler land 119 fish for a total of 205lb.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Jackie Hay from Haddington took a terrific brace weighing 23lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer with the heaviest tipping the scales at 12lbs and John Harvey from Kirkcaldy had one at 8lbs 8oz on a Viva. Jack Fulton from Edinburgh had 7 on Buzzers, Ken Morrison, Edinburgh, 7 on Buzzers, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 9 on a CDC and Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 14 on the Bibio and Black Pennell. Jimmy Dunn from Bonnyrigg took 10 on Buzzers, Craig Gibson, Kirkcaldy, 9 on a Shuttlecock CDC and Martin Williamson from Tranent had 11 on Dries.

4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Thanks again to the generosity of the anglers another successful Strathcarron Charity Day took place raising a whopping raising £3,993.    It was great that the weather improved and the sun came out before the end.   Margaret Wilson's tablet raised £480, which is much appreciated and enjoyed by anglers and their families. The fishing competition was won this year by young angler Stuart Russell with 4 fish for 14lbs and it is fitting that Stuart is the grandson of the late Letty Mitchell, who started this fund raiser in memory of his Granddad Rab who was a well- known angler. John Stevenson was second with 4 fish for 13lbs 12oz, third place went to  John Speedie with 4 fish for 13lbs on a Damsel, Brian Fyffe 4 fish came fourth with 4 for 12lbs 4oz 0 best 4lbs 4oz on a Black & Green Lure and fifth place was shared by Martin Hudak and Davie Black who had 4 fish each weighing 12lbs. Bobby Wilson from Falkirk used Buzzers to take a brace weighing 6lbs, George McLuskey,  Spittalfield, 2 for 8lbs on a Black Damsel, Brian Harper,           Tullibody, 2 for 6lbs 8oz on a Claret Bumble and Peter Low from Crieff took 2 weighing 5lbs 8oz on a Black Fritz.

5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The sudden burst of summer midweek was a welcome change from the cool, windy weather experienced over the last couple of months.   On the hottest days the fishing was best in the mornings when those fishing on the bank from the dam to the boats benefitted from the shade offered by the wood.     Things were a bit harder in the afternoons when the sun was at its highest, but some evenings offered excellent sport particularly on the small ponds.  For most of the week the fish were in the top 2 feet of the water and were looking for something to follow, although they went deeper in the afternoons.   The cloudier conditions at the weekend saw quite a few fish taken on dries and a huge amount more showing interest but not taking on the top.   The Tigers have moved back to the burn area where they enjoy the fresh water entering the pond.    The water temperature hit 14oC at the end of the week but has dropped back to 13oC again.    Water condition is good and clear.   Favourite patterns this week included Buzzer, Sedge, Diawl Bach, Hopper, Damsel, PTN, CDC, Yellow Owl and various small wet flies. The average fish size is smaller than normal at present, because we have just started a new tank for stocking, but they will get bigger in the coming weeks.   They are being supplemented by stockings of several large Blues and Tigers so there should be plenty of interest and sport to come.
Fraser Malcolm, Stirling, 2 for 8lb 4oz including 6lb Brown, Jim Spears, Falkirk, 4lb 12oz Brown, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 10 for 26lb, including a Blue, plus 2 caught and released and Mark Kenyon, Menstrie, over the course of the week, took 12 for 28lb 4oz, experimenting with small nymphs, wet and dry flies from the boat. Allan Laing, East Kilbride, 5 for 13lb 8oz including a Blue, plus 4 caught and returned, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 12lb 4oz, Barry Hamilton, Muirhead, 4 for 11lb 12oz including a Blue and Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 9lb 4oz. Tom Hemmings, Motherwell, 3 for 9lb 8oz including 2 Blues, bigger one at 4lb 8oz, John Mathieson, Stirling, 3 for 8lb 8oz including a Blue and 2 Tigers, Henry Fulton, Greenock, 3 for 8lb 8oz plus 2 caught and released and Chris Kerr, East Kilbride, 3 for 8lb including a Blue. A Mathewman, Motherwell, 3 for 7lb 8oz including 2 Browns, John Moyes, Grangemouth 4lb Blue and J Leslie caught and released 9.

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) Once the weather settled down last week the fishing was excellent with Jordan Carberry taking 3 for 10lbs on C+R, Mr Stirling, Glasgow, had a brace weighing 5lbs 8oz, Mr Gowan, Glasgow, 2 for 7lbs, Paul Harvey, Edinburgh, 2 for 6lbs 8oz and John Fife from Kirkintilloch took 4 for 11lbs. John McCann from Kirkintilloch had 1 at 3lbs 8oz, Pat Harte, Bishopbriggs, 1 at 3lbs,
Mr Clarkson, Kilsyth, had a mixed basket consisting of 4 rainbows, 1 blue and a brown that weighed in at 22lbs 8oz – the brown trout was safely returned and Mr Wright from Kilsyth had a brace of blues for 7lbs – best fish 4lbs.
