All areas of the loch are fishing well and the Kate McLaren, Sedge Muddler, Dabblers, Sedgehogs and Cormorants are included amongst the best catching flies.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It been another thoroughly depressing week of weather again here at Forbes of Kingennie with constant strong winds that have made things much harder for fishing. It hasn’t really affected the amount of fish people are catching though and this week looks much nicer with a lot more settled weather to come. Even with the wind the Bankside has been fishing great, there is still fish well distributed throughout the pond but the tail of the wind is still the hotspot. Mr Sherriff had his best day ever when he landed 26 fish on sunken Hoppers on Saturday. Mr Soave had 5 fish for 14lb 9oz with the biggest 6lb 8oz on a Black and Green Lure. Mr Cowan had 16 one night fishing Dries and Buzzers. The Burnside has been a bit slower with the fish being slightly fussy but they have been getting caught if you get the method right. As soon as the wind drops Dries have been the best method but Blobs have out fished most flies when conditions have been tricky. Mr Matthews had 17 fish on Monday morning with a combination of Shuttlecocks and Fabs. Mr Main had 14 on the Diawl Bach with a fish of around 9lb being his best. The Boathouse has fished well after last week when there was some weed removal taking place on the pond. The sediment is still settling in the pond and has led to bigger flies doing well, as always Damsels and Black Lures have been really good as well as Buzzers and a Fab on the washing line. Mr Middleton who is very new to fly fishing got a shock when just half an hour into his session caught a stunning rainbow weighing 10lb 4oz on a Black Hothead lure - it took him over 15 minutes to get it in the net. Mr Macintyre did well on Dries and a Black Lure returning a dozen fish in 4 hours with one around 6lb.The Woodside is really fishing well now as the fish have moved out around the pond more now. There have also been some much bigger fish getting caught with a lot of people having fish over of over 2lb in the bags. As always Powerbait has been the best bait with worms a close second. Mr Sharp did very well landing a huge bag of fish with 19 fish for 33lb. Mr Jones had 4 fish for 8lb 12oz, Mr Low had 4 fish for 7lb 12oz.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) There were some bigger specimens included in the catches last week with Mark Anderson from Musselburgh taken one at 10lbs on a Rabbit, H Manson, McMerry used an Ally McCoist to tame a brace for 9lbs – best 6lbs 8oz and the Romano Bridge FFC had 8 for 30lbs in horrendous conditions including specimens of 7lbs 8oz and 6lbs 8oz. Donald Hynd from Musselburgh had 7 on a Diawl Bach, Stewart Grieve, Bonnyrigg, 7 on a Yellow Dancer, G Corbett, North Berwick, 7 on a CDC, John Thomson, East Linton, 8 on Buzzers and Spiders and W Neil from Tranent took 5 on a Black & Green Rabbit.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) There has been a lot of fly life on the water despite the unseasonal weather we have had now for weeks Most of the time the fish are taking just under the surface.
J Methven from Dollar Academy caught 1 fish for 2lbs 8oz on a Buzzer, John Graham, Airdrie, 3 for 10lbs – best 4lbs on Buzzers, Tom Seaton, Dunblane, 2 for 5lbs 8oz on a Green & Black lure, Duncan Kennedy, Abernethy, 1 fish for 3lbs on a Black Spider and David Brown from Spittalfield used a Mini Cat to take a brace weighing 7lbs 4oz. Dave Lawson from Methven caught 3 fish for 8lbs 4oz on a Howie's Gismo, Bill Parnell, Perth, 3 for 10lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Greig Lockhart, Dunblane, 3 for 10lbs 8oz on a Black & Silver Buzzer and Jim Marshall from Stirling took 2 for 8lbs on a Loch Ordie. Bill Dawson from Dollar had 3 for 10lbs 8oz on a Mini Cat, Graham King, Auchterarder, 3 for 11lbs on a Daddy and David Lewis from Larbert caught 3 fish weighing 10lbs on a Damsel.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Once again the wind was the major factor in determining conditions at Swanswater this week, particularly at the weekend when the more sheltered small ponds fished really well. The water temperature is still sitting at a chilly 11oC and for most of the week the fish were to be found between 2 and 5 feet down. At certain times fish were seen rising but were generally pretty elusive on the surface or even just under. The exception to that was on the Meadow Pond where dry flies were working well, especially on Friday evening when they were looking for a fast retrieve causing a wake across the surface.Favourite patterns this week included Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, Nomad, Damsel, Cormorant, Montana and Buzzer.Several cracking Brown trout were landed this week, taken from various areas of Swanswater. There were no real hotspots – it was usually a case of anglers finding the most sheltered spots and hoping the fish were nearby!
Two of this week’s most successful anglers, both regulars at Swanswater, were at opposite ends of the age spectrum with 84 year old Willie Martin having a 6lb Brown and a 5lb Blue in his bag, and 10 year old Liam Mullin hooking 9 on the Meadow Pond. Angling truly is a sport for all ages. Mark Kenyon, Menstrie, fishing from the boat on three consecutive days, landed 19 fish for 53lb and returned another 2. Included in his bags were 3 Browns weighing in at 6lb 5oz, 4lb 12oz and 4lb. Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 17lb 12oz including 6lb Brown and 2 Blues, bigger one at 5lb, Kevin Murphy, Cowdenbeath, 5 for 16lb including 5lb 4oz Brown and a Blue, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 5 for 13lb including 3 Blues plus 2 caught and returned and Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 5 for 12lb 4oz including a Blue. Gerrard Dawson and Jock Davidson shared 4 for 12lb 12oz including 2 Blues, Jim Denny, Dunipace, 3 for 9lb including 4lb 8oz Blue and 10 year old Liam Mullin, Pitlochry, fishing with his dad, took 4 for 8lb from the Meadow Pond and returned another 5, all on a dry black spider, while dad managed to blank! Mike Bolton, Maddiston, 2 for 6lb 8oz, Jimmy Smith, Polmont, 2 for 6lb 4oz and Bob Smith, Stirling, 2 for 6lb including a Tiger.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) It was a quiet week due to the horrendous weather but those who braved the elements produced some excellent baskets especially those who used various Buzzers fished on a floating line. Ian McBride from Pollockshaws had the fish of the week, a rainbow of 17lbs included in his basket of 2 weighing 21lbs and John Shaw from Kilsyth used a Yellow Owl Buzzer to bag three terrific blue trout that tipped the scales at 12lbs 8oz. William Wright from Kilsyth took 2 for 5lbs, Don Stewart, Lenzie, 3 for 12lbs, on two visits Mr Haggerty, Glashow, had 5 for 15lbs and Mr Erskine from Kilsyth returned 3. Ian Anderson from Cumbernauld also returned 3, Alex Campbell, Kirkintilloch, 1 at 3lbs 8oz and Mark McBride, Paisley, 1 at 3lbs 5oz.
