JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 13 April 2015. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 12 April 2015.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual front Robert Sinclair from Cowdenbeath kept 6 fish weighing 14lb and released a further 10, Brian Hepburn & Alex Cameron, Dunfermline, kept 12 fish weighing 26lb, Kenny MacMillan & Lewis McDonald, Perth, 12 fish weighing 24lb 8oz and Dave Bain & Willie Campbell from Perth caught and released 33. Roy Paterson from Sauchie took 4 fish for 8lbs and Tom Monaghan, Stirling, kept 4 fish weighing 7lb 4oz.
The angling clubs had good outings with the Rainbow A/C keeping 19 fish weighing 37lb, Gartmore A/C 32 fish for 57lb 4oz, East Kilbride A/C 24 fish for 44lbs and released a further 33 and Kelvinside Academicals A/C took 13 fish for 28lb.
The best flies proved to be the Leggy Bloodworm, Nomad, GB Dawson’s Olive, Cormorant and the Fritz Olive Damsel whilst the area on the South Shore from Smithscleuch Burn to Dam Wall is still highly productive.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It was a busy week here at Kingennie with the Easter holidays and luckily the weather has been kind if not a little windy at times for fishing. There have been a lot more fish moving on the surface as of late and the better the conditions the better the rise seems to be. The Bankside appears to be the most popular pond at the moment and it is understandable why, in the past week the pool has produced over a dozen fish over 5lb including Mr Gordon 7 c+r including 1 at 7lbs on Buzzers, Mr Marshall 5 c+r, 1 at 7lbs on Buzzers, Mr Cowan 8 c+r, 1 at 5lbs on Dries and Mr Sherriff took 1 at 8lbs 8oz and another at 10lbs 8oz on the Yellow Dancer whilst Mr Rennie 1 for 7lb 15oz and returned one at around 9/10lb. The Buzzer fishing has been really good at times but when the weather turns it is better to go on the lures. The Boathouse is still very clear and this has really changed how it needed to be fished as lures aren’t quite as effective as they just seem to be following then turning away. The top method has been Buzzers and the Fab on a floater and just let them swing round in the wind. There have all so been some big fish from here as well Mr Holmes had 1 for 8lb 4oz and put back 8 on a Blob. Mr Dixon put back 11 on Suspender Buzzers with 2 fish estimated to be over 5lb. The Burnside has been quieter but those that have fished it have been rewarded with some good catches, Mr Gibson had 6 fish quickly after moving up from the bankside on a bloodworm. The Deid Ferret club did well taking 27 fish for 52 lb with the largest weighing 7lb. The Woodside has been very busy and some people have been struggling as the fish seem to be shoaling up and if you are in the wrong spot then it has been tricky. As usual Powerbait has been as deadly as ever with most people reporting that as the bait of choice. Mr Reid had his 4 fish for 7lb and Mr White and his son had 5 for 8lb on spinners.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) There were some excellent catches off last week with Mark Anderson from Musselburgh heading the pack with 24 on Blobs and Tommy Dickson from Dunbar had 18 on the Black Pennell. 5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) With a day or two of lovely warm weather, it was as if spring had actually arrived. However things changed again at the weekend and it was cold, breezy and showery with sleet mixed through the driving rain! The fishing was very good throughout, though, and there is a huge list of excellent bags featuring large numbers of our different varieties of fish including several in the 4lb to 5lb range. The biggest fish this week was a lovely 5lb 12oz Brown, and several other Browns and Tigers were also landed. There were no particular hotspots this week, although at times the dam, overflow and island were doing better than elsewhere. In general the fish were around 2 to 3 feet down and taking the usual large selection of lures, nymphs, wets and buzzers. The Fishery is now open until 8.30pm every evening.
