Fishing report by Jim Boyd
ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 29 September 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 28 September 2014.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) NO REPORT THIS WEEK
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It’s been another mild week which has seen a lot of anglers out taking advantage of nice weather to get some fishing done before autumn really sets in. On Sunday the 5th of October Kingennie will be holding a fundraising competition on the Bankside pool to raise money for the Scottish Stillwater Fly Fishing Team. There are great prizes to be won and a raffle on the day, there are still spaces available so anybody looking for more information please call the fishing shop on 01382 350777/350213
All the ponds have been very steady this week and there have been some good returns, the Burnside is still continuing to be the most consistent pond but the Bankside is starting to show its form again after the warm summer. The weed is continuing to die off in the Woodside and this has seen the fish really start to move around the pond more making them quite catchable.
The Boathouse is still keeping it clarity which has helped the fishing. There have been a couple of big fish out this week including a 12lb 12oz fish taken by Mr Bitchard on a black lure. Mr Miller’s fish didn’t quite make double figures but it was a lovely fish weighing 9lb 15oz taken on his own fly the Miller Skunk. Mr Marnie had a good session stalking fish with heavy bugs where he managed to return 10 fish the largest estimated at around 6lb. Mr Dewar did well also taking 10 fish mostly on black lures. Black flies seem to be the most popular with the fish this week but there have been a steady number of fish taken on nymphs. The Burnside has seen the most anglers this week and some have done better than others, Mr Chalmers took 15 fish in a 4 hour session and missed and lost a lot more as well, he was fishing a clear intermediate and a white and green lure casting right into the wind. This seems to be the most important thing as the fish really seem to have followed the wind on all the ponds. It might not be nice casting into the wind but for constant sport it is very important. Mr West had a great session with his first visit to the fishery landing 2 fish for 8lb 7oz and returning 3, the largest being one of our big blue trout weighing in at 6lb 9oz. Lures have been the option for most people with Damsels and Blobs being first choice however dries are still good if you can get the right fly. The Bankside is getting better by the day after the summer and fish are being seen all over the pond but they do seem to be very nomadic with a lot of fish sat in the bays in the morning steadily moving down to the dam wall as the day goes on. Lures are still top method but it really is more a case of being in the right place. Mr Brown did well fishing Damsels off the dam wall into the wind where he had 3 fish for 9lb and put back another 8. There is a huge amount of fry in the pond this year, the fish haven’t really switched on to them yet but there are some signs of fry bashing going on. Hopefully this will improve as the year draws to a close. The Woodside is still producing a lot of fish with the largest weighing 4lb 1oz taken by Mr Ogilvie on Powerbait. As always most baits are taking fish but it’s still the Powerbait that is catching most fish. Over the weekend there were 34 anglers land 66 fish for a total weight of 116lb.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) M. McKinney from Helensburgh took 3 fish for 13lbs 10oz on a Black & Green Rabbit, Joe Beattie, Edinburgh, 6 on a Cat, Lindsay Meary, Edinburgh, 4 on a Hare’s Ear, and Derek Powell from Edinburgh had 5 on a White & Green Rabbit. Gary Reid from Edinburgh caught 14om Edinburgh had 5 on a White & Green Rabbit. Gary Reid from Edinburgh caught 14 on a Black & Green Rabbit, Chris McGhee, Musselburgh, 5 on a Bibio, Jimmy Quinn, Dalkeith, 4 for 16lbs on a Rabbit and J McKenzie from Prestonpans used a Black & Green Rabbit to take 7.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The water is still very clear so floating line with dries on the top or lures just under the surface have been taking fish. On Saturday the Falcon FFC had a good morning taking 29 fish for 82lbs with Willie Barr winning the Allan Davenport Memorial Trophy with 4 fish for 14 lbs. John Beatson from Alloa had 3 fish for 16lbs – best 8lbs on an Ally McCoist, Ronnie Stanovich, Glasgow, 3 for 14lbs – best 5lbs 8oz on a Buzzer, C Docherty, Tillicoultry, 2 for 8lbs on an Ally McCoist and William Alexander used a Damsel to take a brace weighing 8lbs 8oz.Allan McLean from Braco had a fish of 6lbs on a Tadpole, Gavin O'Conner, Northfield, 3 for 12lbs on a Damsel, Graham King, Almondbank, 2 for 6lbs on a Silver Invicta, Tom McGarry, Lomond, 2 for 8lbs 4oz on a Diawl Bach and Jimmy Young from Alloa took 3 fish weighing 11lbs on a Damsel.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The fish are still in the top 2 feet of the water and for most of the week were pretty lively and looking for something to chase. In particular a fast retrieve was needed to attract the Tigers which are now well spread out round the main pond. Plenty of fish are to be seen moving but many are still taking short and it was a question of trying to work out what the best things were to attract them. Conditions for most of the week were good and the fishing matched this, although it was a bit harder sometimes when the sun came out. The water temperature is still around 14oC and water clarity is still excellent. Favourite patterns included Dancer, Tadpole, Ace of Spades, Viva, Cat’s Whisker, Damsel, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear, Montana and Buzzer. The Fishery is now open 8am to 7pm every day.
