The Daddy Longlegs, Kate McLaren, Sedge Muddlers, Cormorants and the Sedgehog are the best flies and the top fishing areas are from the Smithscleuchs Burn to the Dam Wall on the North Shore.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) It has been another week of warm settled weather at Forbes of Kingennie making for near perfect conditions a lot of the time. Some of the evening rises have been very good when the evenings have been warm but when the temperature drops the surface activity hasten been so good. The mornings have been more consistent with a lot of activity up until around midday with the afternoons being bit quieter. The Boathouse has been fishing really well with a great spread of fish right throughout the pond. Dries have been well worth fishing when they are moving on top as they have been very catchable on Shuttlecocks and Sedges. As always lures have taken fish - Yellow Dancers seem to be the most popular. Mr Young Kept 2 fish for 7lb and put back 4 on various lures. Mr Haddow took 4 fish for 13lb and put back 6 on the Diawl Bach and Dries. On the Bankside the new pipe from the Woodside pool has been opened to put some oxygenated water into the pond. Since then there have been a lot of fish sat in the inflow and this has made the fishing very simple if you can find the right fly but they haven’t been too fussy. Buzzers and Dries have been productive if you can get the right pattern, if not and the Orange Blob has been taking plenty fish. Young Robert continued to show his ability by taking 25 fish on the washing line and a few on Dries. Mr Souter has 2 fish for 7lb 11oz the biggest weighing 5lb 8oz. The Burnside has seen the fish head deep down when it’s hot so a sinking line and lures have been working but Buzzers and Nymphs deep down on a floater are a better option. However, dries are worth fishing at the right time. Mr Stevenson had 4 fish for 8lb 15oz and put back 9 on Buzzers. Mr Bruce had 12 fish released on Orange Blobs and the Diawl Bach. The Woodside has still seen most fish getting caught on Powerbait as you need to go down quite deep and the water has been really clear. This has seen most of the fish out in open water and there were a lot of fish taken over the weekend, 45 rods had a total of 72 fish for 116lb the largest of which was a 3lb 12oz rainbow taken by Mr Higgins on a spinner.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The hot clammy weather had quite an impact on the number of fish caught last week but as usual being there at the right time and fishing the right patterns resulted in some great catches for a couple of anglers. Steve Laurie from Gorebridge had 13 and Rab Barry from Edinburgh had 18 with both anglers using a CDC. Tommy Dickson from Dunbar had 7 on the Klinkhammer, Jim Skilling, Shotts, 7 on Bloodworm, Eric Powell, Haddington, 6 on Suspender Buzzers and Daryl Young from Portobello caught 5 on Bloodworm.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The weather has been glorious but of course that does not always good for the anglers while they are fishing. There is such an abundance of feeding for the fish that they are being a bit picky with what they are taking and the depth has been varying with how bright the sun is. Buzzers, Diawl Bach, Blue Bug, Spiders and Daddies as well as various lures have been doing well. On Tuesday the Perthshire Fishing Club had a good day taking 40 fish for 40lbs 12oz. R. Gardner from Falkirk took 4 fish for 15lbs – best 6lbs on Buzzers, E. Collins, Falkirk, 4 for 11lbs on Dries, William Salmond, Alexander's AC, 4 fish for 9lbs 8oz on a Blob, J Strang, Falkirk, 4 for 12lbs on Buzzers and Jack Gibb from Clackmannan used a Diawl Bach to take a brace weighing 6lbs. Hamish Carmichael from Tullibody caught 2 fish for 7lbs 8oz on a Goldie, P. Wakefield, Aberdeen, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a PTN, Jim Marshall, Stirling, 2 for 7lbs 8oz on a Green & Black Bug and Kong from took 2 for 7lbs 8oz on a Damsel.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) It was a week of contrasting fortunes at Swanswater with some anglers doing very well and others finding the hot, bright conditions more challenging. The fish were feeding in bursts and some anglers were catching 2 or 3 in a short spell of time, then, finding there was nothing happening for a period before they came on again. The water temperature is currently 18oC and the oxygen levels are low so things can be quite hard. Fish are either being taken deep down on lures or just under the surface on nymphs and wet flies; sometimes static buzzers are working, other times the fish are just ignoring them. On the small ponds a lot of fish were being caught on dry flies at times when they wouldn’t even look at anything else. Many anglers were getting lots of follows but the fish were turning away at the last minute. The best time for fishing has been the mornings before it gets too hot, and some evenings have been good although others have been hard. On the main pond the Browns are congregating around the big tree and the Tigers are still to be found in the mouth of the burn. Geoff Gilbert, on holiday for a week from the Isle of Man, kept 8 fish for 26lb 8oz including 6lb 3oz Rainbow, a Blue and a Brown, and returned another 40 over 6 days fishing. Billy Weir, Bannockburn, 3 for 11lb including 5lb 4oz Blue and a Tiger, Alan Wales, Broxburn, 4 for 14lb 2oz including 3 Blues, biggest at 4lb, Frank Barr, Falkirk, in three boat outings, 14 for 40lb 12oz including a Blue, 2 Tigers and a Brown and Willie Nyguist, Stirling, in two visits, 9 for 27lb including a 2 Blues and a Brown. Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 4 for 13lb including a Brown, Andy Collins, Glasgow, 3 for 9lb 12oz, Andy Hepburn, Bannockburn, 3 for 9lb including 2 Browns and a Tiger, Stuart Nicholson, Knightswood, 3 for 9lb including 2 Blues and a Brown and Barry Hamilton, Motherwell, 2 for 7lb 8oz including 4lb 12oz Rainbow. Sandy Donald, Dunblane, 2 for 7lb 4oz, Colin Smith, Glasgow, 2 for 7lb including a Tiger and W Bruce 2 for 6lb 8oz.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The custom built fishing lodge is now up and running along with a new car park and both are conveniently sited right at the side of the fishery. In the lodge anglers can enjoy a wide selection of hot and cold drinks and hot snacks. There is comfortable seating to relax and chat after a session, a toilet, a selection of flies and lures for sale and a very attractive decking where anglers can enjoy the spectacular panoramic views.
Last week the fishing was, like most other Scottish fisheries, tricky due to the very hot weather conditions but again those who persevered were rewarded with a trout or two. On the fly front Bruce from Glasgow had the best fish of the week at 4lbs, Robert Park, Lennoxtown, 2 for 3lbs 4oz, William Smith, Stirling, 2 for 4lbs 8oz and Gavin Has from Cumbernauld had 2 on catch and release. The best flies last week were the Ally McCoist, Buzzers, Black Spider, Yellow Dancer, Damsel Nymph and the Cat’s Whisker. The bait fishers doing best included Pat Hart from Bishopbriggs with 1 for 3lbs, Andy Meldrum, Kirkintilloch, 5 for 14lbs, Colin Zandbergen, Falkirk, 1 at 3lbs 8oz and Mr Sherlens from Springburn had one weighing 2lbs 5oz.
