ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 31 March 2014. The report is for the week ending Sunday, 30 March 2014.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual front Mark Paterson from Stirling kept 2 fish weighing 4lb, Hamish Dunlop, Tullibody, caught and released 4, Raymond Pirrie, Tullibody, caught and released 6 and Jim Donnelly from Tullibody kept 2 fish weighing 4lb 8oz and released a further 12. Bill Brant from Denny caught a brace weighing 3lb 8oz and Brian Hepburn, Dunfermline, kept 6 fish weighing 14lb.
The Stanley & District A/C had a very successful outing keeping 38 fish weighing 79lb 10oz. The top taking flies included the Black Diawl Bach, Cormorant, Coral/Yellow Dancer, Hothead Damsel, Olive Hotty the Red/Orange Quad Bead Worm. The best fishing area has been from the Smithscleuchs and the Dow Burn to the Dam Wall on the South shore.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) Despite a nice start to the week it has been quite a cold with stiff easterly wind blowing most days and it has put the fish down a bit. There have been good returns from all the ponds but the introduction of catch and release permits on the Boathouse pool the pond has been very busy and has seen some great catches reported. The water is very clear at the moment and this has helped as small patterns such as Spiders, Buzzers and Nymphs taking just as many fish as lures. Mr Bairner took 4 fish for 13lb and returned a further 14 mostly on small Damsels. Mr McLaren had 3 fish 10lb and returned another 6. Mr Watson caught and released 12 fish on Black Buzzers and a small wet fly. The Burnside has seen the fish sitting fairly deep but very catchable especially fishing Buzzers deep under a bung. As usual lures on an intermediate is the other most productive method, Damsels, Black and Green lures and Blobs being used the most. Mr Robertson had 2 fish for 5lb 6oz and returned another 13 fishing Buzzers. Mr Stevenson took 3 fish for 6lb 7oz and put back another 10 on Blobs on a Di3.The Bankside has been very consistent with a lot of fish on the north bank and the first bay. Again natural patterns such as Buzzers are doing well and there were fish even quite a few coming out on Dries. Hot Head Damsels and Yellow Dancers have been the top lures with a Cormorant on the dropper on a floating line. Mr Soave took 2 fish for 6lb on a Yellow Dancer. Mr Cruikshank took 4 fish for 11lb 6oz and returned 7. Mr Barlow was back to his usual ways taking 11 fish on Buzzers including a 4lb blue. The Woodside is still producing lots of fish with Powerbait being top method again this week as well as spinners. Most of the fish seem to be at the tail of the wind and in front of the restaurant. Mr Mario had 4 fish for 7lb including a 2lb 8oz brown trout. Mr Whyte had 4 fish for 8lb with a 3lb blue trout as well all caught on a spinner.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) It was another quiet week due to the very cold conditions but despite this Paul Kennedy from Haddington took 12 on Buzzers including the ‘fish of the week’ a rainbow of 12lbs 4oz. Also doing well was Neil Muir from Kelso with 11 on the Cormorant, Jack Stevenson, Ormiston, used a Damsel to take one at 10lbs 8oz and Jim McKenzie from Prestonpans had 7 on the Fritz. Keith Watson from Hagston took 15 on a Bloodworm and a Yellow Dancer, Bruce Hunter, Edinburgh, 5 on various lures and David Savage from Edinburgh, 6 on a Black & Green Buzzer.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) Despite the water temperature being still on the low side fish are being seen on top but are taking the lures at the 3-4 foot mark. Best flies have been the Ally McCoist, Damsel and Buzzers. Dave Wilkie from Stirling had 4 for 10lbs on Buzzers, Ian Taylor, Tullibody, 4 for 13lbs 8oz on a Green Nomad, Ronnie Stanovitch, Glasgow, 3 for 11lbs on a Black Fritz and Willie Smith from Menstrie had a brace weighing 7lbs 8oz – best 5lbs on a Damsel. Donald Blyth from Doune caught 2 for 6lbs on a Cat, John Weir, Airdrie, 3 for 8lbs on a White Fritz, Jim McIndoe, Cambusbarron, 4 for 8lbs on a Damsel and Errol Fagin from Bonnybridge took 4 for 10lbs on a Damsel. David Rutherford from Bo’ness manages 4 for 12lbs on a Red Bug and brother Douglas from Grangemouth took 4 for 11lbs 8oz on a Green Bug.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) For most of the week the fish were in the top 3 feet of the water and were looking for something to chase. This year’s batch of Tigers is now being stocked and many anglers are reporting being followed in to the edge by Tigers and Browns. Even those not hooking into a fish are enjoying a lot of sport from these cracking fish. The east wind slowed things down a bit towards the end of the week and the fish were to be found downwind in the far bay, the boat area, the island and round the back. On the small ponds, which are more sheltered from the wind, the fish were nearer the surface and some were taking dry flies, such as Daddy Long Legs and Grey Wulff. Other successful patterns this week included Black Spider, Hawthorn, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear, Damsel, Montana, and Ally McCoist. Now that the clocks have gone forward the Fishery is open from 8am to 7.30pm every day. Ian MacDonald, Alva, 3 for 12lb 10oz including 6lb 10oz Tiger, Donald McMurchy, Fallin, 5 for 15lb 12oz including 2 Blues, bigger one at 5lb 8oz and 2 Tigers, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 5 for 15lb 4oz including 3 Blues and a Brown and Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 14lb 8oz including 3 Blues. Alan Harvey, Glasgow, 5 for 13lb 12oz including 2 Browns and a Tiger, Tom McGarry, Dumbarton, 4 for 11lb 8oz including a Blue and a Brown, Jim Anderson, Carstairs, 4 for 11lb 4oz including a Blue and John Cairns, Glasgow, 4 for 11lb including 3 Blues. Derek Robertson, Glasgow, 3 for 6lb 8oz from the Millpond including a Tiger, plus another 6 caught and released including 4 Tigers.
6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie) The water is still very cold so best results are coming from those who are fishing deep and slow. On the fly fishing front Robin Hood took one at 3lbs, Callum Henderson from Milton of Campsie had a brace weighing 4lbs 8oz and A Inglis from Larbert took 3 for 10lbs 7oz. John Connelly from Cumbernauld had 2 for 6lbs 7oz and returned a great brown trout of 7lbs.
