Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES

JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer

Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 29 July 2013.The following report is for the week ending Sunday, 28 July 2103.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) The angling clubs were out in force last week with the Royal British Legion from Roslin keeping 29 fish weighing 62lb, Dunfermline Artisan caught 20 fish for 48lb 15oz, Denny & District A/C kept 6 fish weighing 15lb 12oz and Tillicoultry A/C took 17 fish for 42lb 8oz. Perth Anglers had 7 fish weighing 18lb 5oz. Auchenhowie A/C 2 fish for 4lb 11oz, Fife Constabulary A/C kept 4 fish weighing 9lb and the Perthshire Inter Club Competition caught 12 fish for 28lb. The best fishing method last week was to fish deep with lures like the Cat’s Whiskers, Damsel Nymph and the Yellow Dancer and the best fishing area is on the north shore from the dam wall to the start of the dog-leg.
 2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The arrival of rain this week at Forbes of Kingennie has seen the water levels rising slightly and seems to of stirred the fish up as well. During the heat of the day the day the fishing has been tricky with early morning and late evenings being the best time to get among the fish. The Boathouse has stayed quite clear after the rain and there have been some big fish being taken. The best fish last week was taken by Mr Small with a 13lb 7oz rainbow taken on a black lure. Another fish of 11lb 7oz was taken on a size 12 black buzzer by Mr Campbell. Most fish have been taken on lures but nymphs and small flies have been more consistent. The Burnside has been by far the most consistent pond. Buzzers under the bung has been the most popular method taking a lot of fish. Lures have been effective but you need to let them sink right down deep. Mr Christie had a great evening taking 2 fish for 4lb 4oz and returning 8 more in 3 hours fishing. The Bankside is still low with quite a lot of weed around and this has brought most of the fish into the middle of the pond in the deep water. The top methods seem to be either dry flies or a blob. Mr Miller did well catch and releasing 7 fish in two hours on a blob. Mr Whyte had a great morning taking 1 for 4lb 6oz and returning 5 more on a Daddy Long Legs. The Woodside has fished well giving the low level of the water. The level has risen and is going up daily after the rain. The best method by far has been green Powerbait fished on a lead around 1 foot of the bottom. Spinners have also been very effective. Mr Hughes and his son had a great evenings sport taking 8 fish for 13lb with the biggest fish weighing 2lb 5oz
3. MARKLE (East Lothian)   It was a very quiet week due to the hot sultry but that didn’t stop ace angler Tommy Dickson of Dunbar from taking 9 fish on the Diawl Bach including an absolute whopper that tipped the scales at 19lbs 4oz. Also doing well was Ian Findlay from North Berwick who used a CDC to take a great fish weighing in at 15lbs, Dougie Gribble, Edinburgh, had 9 on a Buzzer, The 1314 FFC from Stirling had a good outing catching 28 fish for 57lbs and Garry Elliot from Durham used a White Buzzer to land a nice rainbow of 6lbs. Last but not least John Russell from Prestonpans had 8 on a Claret Buzzer.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) The rain and thunder and lightning of last week was actually quite welcome as it cooled the water down slightly which was much needed. However it t is still frustrating for the anglers as the fish can be seen moving around but it is difficult to get them to take the flies. Some fish are being caught on the top but in the main they being caught deeper down on a wide variety of flies including the Damsel, C.D.C's, Buzzers, Sedge, Bloodworm, Kate McLaren and the Black & Green Fritz fished slow to static.
David Muir from Bo’ness took 4 fish for 10lbs on a Yellow Dancer, T. Brogan,                 Bo'ness, 4 for 8lbs on a Big & Ugly, Jimmy Young, Alloa, 3 for 8lbs on Buzzers and Graham King from  Almondbank used an Invicta to take a brace weighing 6lbs. R. Angus from Perth caught 3 for 8lbs 8oz on a Damsel, Ebony Gowans, Edinburgh, 1 for 2lbs on a Green Blob, William Smith, Menstrie, 2 for 6lbs 4oz on a Damsel and M Baxter, Dunfermline, 2 for 6lbs on a Yellow & White Fritz.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) As is common at this time of year and particularly during and after a prolonged spell of hot weather, the fishing was very hard this week.   Even the rain at the weekend did little to help matters as the water temperature remained high and the oxygen content, low, although the water is still clear and there is no sign of algae.   Fish are still being stocked on a regular basis and one day this increased head of fish will pay good dividends!   Several anglers have reported seeing a lot of fish in the burn particularly above the small bridge where there is more flow of water.   Some have tried their luck there but not many have succeeded landing fish.   The Tigers, in particular, seem to be hiding in this area and a few anglers have hooked into a tiger only to have the fish spit the fly out again.    Fish are also hiding in the deeper water out in the middle of Swanswater and those in boats tended to do well this week.  Those who were successful were mostly using lures – Cat’s Whisker, Red Dancer, or Fritz – or else small nymphs and wet flies including Diawl Bach, PTN, Black Spider and Buzzer.
Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, took 9 for 27lb 12oz including 5lb Rainbow and 6 Blues, biggest one at 4lb, all from the boat, John Dreczkowski, 2 for 6lb 4oz, including 4lb Rainbow from the boat, Allan Whitton, Stirling, 2 Blues for 6lb 2oz and Jack Allison, Stirling 3 for 8lb from the small ponds including a Tiger from the Millpond. John Alcock, Balloch, fishing from the boat took 4 for 11lb including 3 Blues and returned 4 more, Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, returned 3 from the boat, Willie Nyguist, Stirling, kept a 3lb 8oz Rainbow and returned 4 more and Robert McLean 3 for 7lb from the Millpond including 2 Blues.
6. WOODBURN FISHERY (Milton of Campsie) The weather went from one extreme to the other in the course of the last week but the heavy rain of late has now cooled the water temperature down a bit and this has helped the fly fishing enormously with Alex Knox from Glasgow using a Buzzer to bag 3 fish for 12lbs. Alan Henderson from Glasgow landed a rainbow of 5lb on a Yellow Buzzer and Con Dillon, Glasgow, had a brace weighing 6lbs 8oz on the Ally McCoist. On the bait front David Whyte landed 4 fish weighing 13lbs 3oz on the worm, Pat Harte from Bishopbriggs had 3 for 8lbs 2oz on a maggot and William Wright from Kilsyth used the worm to take a brace weighing 8lbs.
