Fishing report by Jim Boyd

ANGLING PRESS SERVICES
JIM BOYD - angling journalist/photographer
Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 24 June 2013.The
following report is for the week ending Sunday, 23 June 2103.

1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual front Philip Martin & Sean Roddy  from
Perth kept 9 fish weighing 19lb 12oz, Alastair MacMillan & Brian Thorne, Comrie,
11 fish for 24lb 14oz, George Keith & Tam Langdon, Dunfermline, 6 fish weighing
13lb and fishing with a sporting ticket Andy Hunter from Alloa released 12. Alastair
MacMillan from Comrie kept 5 fish weighing 10lb 4oz and released a further 5,
Gavin Dunn & Stevie Hamill, Cumbernauld, 7 fish for 16lb and James Barrett & Scott
Barrett,  Stanley, kept 8 fish weighing 16lb 4oz.

The clubs who visited had great sport with the Falkirk Municipal A/C keeping 39 fish
weighing 88lb, Auchterarder A/C 9 fish weighing 21lb 8oz, Dunoon & District A/C
kept 24 fish weighing 57lb 8oz and the Union & Crown A/C 5 fish scaling 13lb 2oz.
Ferranti A/C kept 25 fish weighing 57lb 6oz and released a further 4 and Rannoch &
District A/C took 13 fish weighing 27lb 4oz.

The top taking flies and lures included the Black Hopper, Kate McLaren, Sedge
Muddlers, Okey Dokey, Cormorants and the Sedgehog whilst the Dam Wall and the
North Shore were the best fishing areas.

2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The recent good weather has seen
angler numbers increase at Kingennie. However the weekend rain has also been
welcomed as water levels had fallen. There is an abundant supply of natural food
around, which can make fly selection somewhat critical to success. Most of the fish
taken from the Boathouse Pool have been in the 4-5lbs range. Mr. Storrier landed a
rainbow of 5lbs 10ozs on a gold headed Pheasant Tail Nymph. Orange Fritz, Silver
Sparkler and Cat's Whiskers have also had success. On the Burnside Pool lures,
Buzzers and Daddy Longlegs all took fish at various times. The Simpsons had 17
fish between them on catch and release in one evening session. So far this season
surface activity has been somewhat more restrained than last year but any signs of
caenis hatches seem to make the fish more active. The Bankside Pool by contrast
is displaying a lot of fish in the surface layers but these are far from easy to catch.
Even some of the regular anglers are finding it difficult to unlock the feeding patterns.
Mr. Campbell took three nice fish for 8.50lbs. Craig Dixon conjured up 20 on dry flies
and Bruce Martin also produced some magic, catching 10 fish on a small grey bug
- all these fish were released. The Woodside Pool  reached its best on Saturday
when 41 fish weighing 56lbs 4oz were taken. Green Powerbait was again the most
successful bait, followed by orange Powerbait and spinners.

3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Tommy Dickson from Dunbar was the star of the show
last week starting off with b14 on catch and release then later taking and releasing
two biggies – one at 14lbs 2oz and the other at 14lbs 8oz – all fish were taken on a
size 16 Blae and Black. Father and son duo of Tom Russell junior and senior from
Earlston 9 and 8 respectively on dries and Buzzers, the Fishers of Penicuik took 14
fish for 38lbs 8oz and Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had a great 13lb 2oz rainbow
on a Damsel. James Fleming from Elphinstone had 11 on a CDC, Derek DeMarco,
Edinburgh used a Bloodworm to bag a nice specimen of 4lbs 4oz and Neil Carey,
Edinburgh, had one at 4lbs 8oz on a Black Buzzer.

4.  ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) With warm clear water and an abundance of natural
feeding the fish are being more difficult to entice to the artificial flies. Dry flies as well
as the usual Damsels and lures have been taking fish with a fairly slow retrieve. On
Tuesday the Perthshire FFC had 21 fish for 50lbs 8oz with the heaviest basket being
taken by J McEwan with 4 fish for 10lbs 4oz.On Sunday the Falcon FFC had a rather
wet morning taking 17 fish for 40lbs 4oz with Jim Colley taking the heaviest basket
with 4 fish for 10lbs 4oz.

Also doing well last week was Connor Meiklejohn from Stirling with 3 fish for 13lbs
– best 9lbs on a Yellow Dancer, Bill Holleran, Bo'ness, 2 for 9lbs 4oz – best 7lbs
8oz on Dries, Fay McLeod, Perth, 2 for 6lbs 8oz on a Yellow Fritz and G Adams
from Bridge of Allan had 4 fish for 12lbs on a Diawl Bach. R. Pirie from  Bridge of Allan caught 4 fish for 10lbs on a Diawl Bach, Graham King, Almondbank, 2 for 6lbs on a Damsel, John Gilchrist Jnr, Australia, 4 for 8lbs on a Damsel and Allan Stirling from Auchterarder had 3 fish for 6lbs on
Hoppers. Ronnie Stanovich from Glasgow took 3 fish weighing 8lbs on Snatchers,
Eaddie Cannon,  Falkirk, 3 for 9lbs on a Black & Green Fritz and Robert Young,
Kilsyth, 3 for 8lbs 8oz on Bloodworm.

5.  SWANSWATER (Stirling) The warm sunny weather continued for most of the
week and although fish were being seen moving on the surface, they were being
hooked around 2 to 3 feet down.     Most fish are still being taken on nymphs, wet
flies and buzzers, with favourite patterns being Damsel, Diawl Bach, Hare’s Ear,
Montana, Kate McLaren, Spider, Bibio and Invicta. A few anglers are persisting
with small lures, Dancer and Cat’s Whisker, and getting good results. Although
evening rises are intermittent, occasional fish were taking dry flies with White Moth
being the best pattern.  Conditions are looking good for the coming week with the
slightly lower temperatures, less humidity, more cloud cover and excellent water
clarity. The small ponds continue to provide good sport both for those taking fish
and for anglers opting to return fish. Members of the Swanswater Cygnets had a
mixed morning on the Millpond on Sunday with some landing fish and others hooking
and losing them. Any disappointment was soon dispelled by the visit of Honorary
President, Paul Young, who walked round and gave the youngsters plenty of tips
and encouragement.

Catherine Peachey, Scone, 5 for 20lb 8oz including 6lb 12oz Rainbow and 2 Blues,
bigger one also at 6lb 12oz, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 16lb 10oz including 3

Quinn, Dunfermline, 3 for 11lb 12oz including a Blue and 2 Tigers. Steven Mason,
Cumbernauld, and 12 year old son, Jordan, shared 6 for 17lb, including 2 Blues for
dad and 3lb 8oz Tiger for Jordan, Peter Henderson, Cumbernauld, 8 for 10lb 4oz
including 2 Blues, and Willie Martin, Stirling, 5 for 12lb 8oz including 3 Blues. Ricky
Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 11lb 4oz including 2 Blues, R Nairn, 4 for 10lb 8oz including

3 for 9lb including a Blue and a Tiger. Jim Craig, Balloch, 2 for 4lb 8oz including a

6. WOODBURN FISHERY (Milton of Campsie) Last Saturday the fishery hosted
an outing organised by the Fly Fishing Forum group and the winner was John
Shaw from Kilsyth with his total basket weighing in at 16lbs 8oz, Malcolm Millar
from Clackmannan came second with 3 fish for 9lbs and Mark Anderson, Kilsyth,
won the prize for the heaviest fish with a double figured brownie which he safely
returned. Also doing well last week on the fly was Robert Hood from Kilsyth who
