The top taking flies and lures included the Fritz Olive Damsel, Yellow Dancer,
Various Cormorants Sedgehogs and the Kate McLaren and like last week all areas
of the fishery are performing well.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The fishing this week at Forbes
of Kingennie has really seen the benefit from the heat with some huge hatches
coming off. There has been a lot of fish showing on the surface and the more natural
approach has been more successful than the lures.
The Bankside has seen the most fish showing on the surface with fish spread out
all over the pond. There have been fish getting caught on the dry fly with small
Suspender Buzzers doing well. Buzzers and Nymphs have been the most consistent
method fished on the washing line with a small Fab on the point. Mr Thompson had
a great morning taking 7 fish in a couple of hours fishing the washing line. Mr Cowan
had a great evening session returning 15 fish on a dry fly.
The water in the Boathouse has been quite clear and really good sight fishing has
been possible. Most fish have fallen to lures with the Hothead Damsels and Yellow
Dancers being most popular. Young angler Shawn Gowans was delighted to land his
new personal best trout weighing 8lb exactly. Mr Whyte took a lovely bag of 4 fish for
26lb with the best weighing 7lb 14oz.The Burnside has held a wee bit of colour in
the water but there has been plenty of fish getting caught, small lures have been the
best choice with Orange Blobs and Montana's doing well. Mr Dickson had a hectic
session fishing Buzzers and Shuttlecocks returning 11 fish in four hours.
The Woodside has seen fish getting caught all over the pond and it seems that
worms have taken over from Powerbait as being the best method. Mr Fleming took 5
fish for 9lb fishing worms under the float
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) Ross Wilson from North Berwick had 10 on an Orange
Lure – best 13lbs 8oz, Liam Glass, Edinburgh, 9 on the Black Hopper and the
Daddy, Martin Williamson, Tranent, 12 on Dries and the Honeywell AC took 19 fish
weighing 51lbs 8oz. James Fleming from Elphinstone used Buzzers and Dries to
catch 8, Eric Livingstone, Edinburgh used a Buzzer to catch a 12lb 4oz brown that
was safely returned and Jim Skilling from Shotts had 12 on Buzzers.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It was another week of very changeable weather but the
fishing has been great with plenty of fly life on the surface so a wide variety of flies
have been catching including the Kate McLaren, C.D.C's, Hoppers,, Silver Butcher,
Bloodworm, Hare's Ear, Damsel and various Fritz patterns all fished on a floating
line.
Last Saturday the Live Line AC had a good day taking 37 fish for 82lbs with Ian
Brown winning with 4 fish for 10lbs 12oz Buzzers. On Sunday the Falcon FFC had
a good morning (until the heavy rain came on) catching 32 fish for 77lbs with Alec
Burns having the heaviest bag with 4 fish for 11lbs on an Ally McCoist.
Also doing well was Jim Coghlan from Auchterarder with 3 fish for 12lbs best 7lbs
on a dry fly, D Allan, Perth, 3 fish 9lbs on dry flies, Kenny McLeod, Perth, 2 fish 5lbs
on a Hare's Lug and Tex from Cornton took a brace weighing 6lbs on Dries. Ian
Sloan from Perth caught 4 fish for 11lbs on an Ally McCoist, Gavin Rose, Falkirk,
used a Yellow Dancer to catch 2 for 7lbs and T & K Hingley from Alloa bagged 6
fish weighing 17lbson an Ally McCoist, Hugh Bratchie from Lochgelly took 3 fish for
7lbs 8oz on a Hot Head Damsel, Jimmy Young, Alloa, had 3 for 8lbs on a Green and
White Fritz and John Beatson, Alloa, took 3 fish for 7lbs 12oz on a Green & White
Fritz.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) The week started cold, blustery and showery but the
weather did improve and although it was still cool, the wind dropped and by the
weekend it was almost too calm! The rise in temperature has brought the fish up
in the water and they have at long last started to take something other than lures,
with small patterns being more successful over the weekend. Buzzer, Diawl Bach,
Black Pennell, Hare’s Ear and Damsel were the most popular, with a few fish even
taking dry flies on the small ponds on Sunday. The Fishery is now open 8.00am to
10.00pm every day.
The SANA Stillwater Championship heat took place on Sunday in testing conditions,
with the water being a bit coloured after heavy rain overnight. The competition
was all catch and release with the top six anglers going forward to the final in
Aberdeenshire in June. Amongst those qualifying were local anglers Michael Chubb
and Willie Nyguist, who both acquitted themselves well against some stiff opposition.
Please note that the main pond, Swanswater, will be closed on Saturday 25th
May because of a club outing. The two small ponds will be open as usual and
Swanswater will reopen at 5pm. William Hamilton, Oban, 5 for 15lb 8oz including a
Blue and 2 Tigers, bigger one at 4lb 8oz, George McLeod, 5 for 14lb 8oz including
2 Tigers, Rhys Wadley, Swansea, 3 for 8lb 12oz including a Blue and a Tiger and
Willie Walker, Falkirk, 3 Blues for 7lb 4oz. Willie Martin, Stirling, 4 Blues for 9lb 12oz,
J Gary, 3 for 8lb including a Blue and a Tiger and T Hill, 3 for 8lb 4oz including a
Blue and a Tiger.
6. WOODBURN FISHERY (Milton of Campsie) Once again the fishing was largely
controlled by the pretty awful weather that persisted for the better part of last week
but despite this Woodburn again lived up to its burgeoning reputation by producing
some really fine catches and individual fish – especially brown trout.
On the bait front Alex Campbell was the winner of last week’s big fish catch when
he took a tremendous 15lb 7oz brown trout that was released to fight another day
– Alex picked up a free permit as his reward. In addition to the big brown he also
bagged 4 nice rainbows that tipped the scales at 9lbs 8oz.Jim Coombe from Milton
of Campsie caught 5 rainbows for 12lbs on worm and Dennis Maxwell, Bishopbriggs,
had 4 rainbows for 8lbs 2oz.
The fly men had some excellent sport with Mark Caffrey from Cumbernauld catching
and returning a superb 12lb brown on a Rainbow Warrior fished on an intermediate
line. Martin Smart from Milton of Campsie used a Black & Silver lure to catch and
release 3 brown trout and he also retained 4 rainbows for 10lbs 3oz. On Monday,
Alan Baird from Kilsyth took the boat out and braved the white horses to catch and
release a couple of rainbows – he returned later in the week and in calmer conditions
took and returned a beautifully conditioned 4lb brown trout that fell to the charms of
his Rosie Bell. Wullie McCulloch from Kilsyth used an Orange Fritz to take a rainbow
of 4lbs that proved to be the best rainbow of the week.
