Issued by Jim Boyd on behalf of the following fisheries on Monday 18 March
2013.The following reports is for the week ending Sunday, 17 March 2103.
1. FRANDY (Gleneagles) On the individual front Alberto Rossi & Allan Brown from
Bonnybridge kept 11 fish weighing 23lb, John Philliban, Stenhousemuir, released 6,
Michael Willis, Dunblane, 3 fish for 6lb 8oz, Jim Donnelly, Tullibody, 2 fish weighing
6lb and released 9 and Mark Robertson & John Fotheringham from Falkirk kept 8
fish weighing 18lb. Robert Bellamy & Garry Porter from Grangemouth took 9 fish
weighing 18lb 8oz, Raymond Pirrie, Tullibody, fishing with a sporting ticket released
9 and Jimmy Millar from Alva released 4. The Stanley & District A/C fishing in almost
whiteout conditions kept 29 fish weighing 68lb 8oz.
The best flies and lures included the Dawson’s Olive, Black Taddie, Nomad, Silver
Humungus and the Red/Orange Quad Bead Worm whilst the best areas have been
on the south shore from the Smithcleuch burn to the dam wall.
2. FORBES OF KINGENNIE (Broughty Ferry) The fishing last week at Kingennie
was somewhat challenging with the wind and rain making things fairly hard - strong
easterly winds on most days made casting harder than normal. Combine this with
intermittent rain to colour the water and you have some hard conditions to catch
trout.
The anglers that did make their way out on to the water were rewarded with a few
nice returns. On the Boathouse Lochan the water held a tinge of colour most of the
week with most of the fish caught falling to lures. The two biggest fish of the week
fell to large lures - Mr. Thompson from Dundee had a cracking rainbow of bang on
9lb this fish was caught on a Yellow Dancer and his fishing partner Mr. McCabe
returning 3 browns around the 3.5lb mark. Brian Williams had a good bag with one
of his fish just making the biggest of the week at 9lbs 8oz and this fish fell to an
Orange Bunny Leech. Most of the fish this week on the boathouse have been
around 3lbs 8oz with the average catch/size rate being 1.8 fish per angler at 4.3lb
average weight. On the Bankside Lochan lures on intermediate lines has been the
most productive method with the top catching lures being the Yellow Dancer, Hot
Head Damsel, Bunny Leech and the Rob Roy. The fish have been sitting in the bays
for the last week or so but have now started to spread out around the lochan.
Season ticket holder George Birse did very well this week catching 24 fish on his
three outings, not bad considering the conditions. Most of the rods took their limit
this week with catch and release rods taking on average 8 fish for a four hour ticket,
on the kill tickets the average catch/size has been 1.9 fish per angler at 2.0lb
average weight. The Burnside Lochan held its tinge of colour most of the week and
as a result catch returns were affected as with the other fly ponds so it has been
back to lures on intermediates - the Polar Bears and Humongous have both taken
fish but the most popular lure this has been the Rob Roy. Kill ticket catch returns
have been 1.8 fish per angler at 1.6lb average weight, catch and release tickets
have fared slightly better at 4 fish per angler. On the Woodside Lochan all the fish
have been sitting very deep so anglers have had to fish ledgered baits two to three
feet off bottom in order to catch. Powerbait and sweet corn have done the best of all
baits; small Mepps spinners have also taken fish but bait fished near or on bottom
has done best. Returns from Woodside are 2 fish per angler at a 1.3lb average
weight.
3. MARKLE (East Lothian) The big fish are conspicuous by their absence this week
but the catch and release anglers recorded some excellent bags. Jim Skilling from
Shotts heads the list with a stunning 25 taken on Blobs, Steve Rodgers, Edinburgh,
18 on the Mini Cat, Tommy Dickson, Dunbar, used the Egg Fly to land 14 and E
Millar had 12 on Buzzers. Jackie Hay from Haddington had 9 on Buzzers and the
Diawl Bach whilst Roddie Stewart, Paisley, used Buzzers to bag 8.
4. ORCHILL LOCH (Braco) It is incredible to look back to this time last March
at Orchill the anglers were getting sunburned and compare this to the cold, wet,
sleety snowy conditions currently being experienced. With the varying weather
affecting the water temperature the fish are being caught on a wide variety of flies at
different depths. On Saturday the qualifier for Ian Barr's Airflow Bank Master Open
Championship was held with 7 anglers taking part and the winner was Murray Hunter
with 10 fish and second was Kenny Hunter who also qualified for the final.
On Sunday the Linden FFC caught 26 fish for 72lbs with the Bernard Robertson
taking the heaviest basket of 4 fish for 10lbs on a Goldie. Also doing well last
week was Robert Young from Kilsyth with 3 fish for 11lbs – best 5lbs on a Green
& Black Fritz, Harry Irvine, Blairgowrie, paid two visits and was well rewarded with
11 fish for 22lbs 8oz on a Tiny Cat whilst Ian Grassam from Falkirk used a Yellow
Dancer to catch 5 for 10lbs 8oz. Mike Christie from Scone took a brace for n5lbs
4oz on Buzzers, Mark Brownrigg, Callander, 3 for 9lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer, Jim
Prentice, Tullibody, 4 for 12lbs on a Damsel and D. Blair, Ardrossan, 4 for 9lbs 8oz
on a Hot Head Cat. Last but not least Allan Mitchell from Stirling caught 2 fish for
5lbs.
5. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Despite overnight frosts, Swanswater remained open
all week and will hopefully do so again this week thanks to the aerators which keep
the ponds more or less ice free.
