Lake of Menteith 8th October
6ft Water Temperature 10C, Clarity (Secchi disc) 2.2m .
Some big fish about at the Lake these days so don’t go out with anything less than 8lbs, preferably 10lb breaking
strain nylon. It looks set fine for the next two or three days as well – so a good time to be floating about for
October. Best areas last week are reported to have been Gateside, Sam Points and the Shallow Markers, Lcohend,
Kates Brae and the Heronry. Flies mentioned in dispatches over the weekend were: dries, tequila fab, kate mclaren
and the red head damsel. Lines deployed were floating through to Di3.
Above: Abigail Montgomery from Inverness boated this
cracking resident of 6 ½ lbs in the Heronry (Photo courtesy
of Nikki Ross). I was introduced to Mike McKinnel (above right), who is also pictured 41 years earlier at the
1971 International held at the Lake. I quote from Mike “This was the first match fished at the Lake and
coincidentally was the first year of Loch Fitty! The Scottish Team were L to R :- William Wallace (Father of
Adam), Eric Campbell, Ronald Andrews, ? , George Dagger (Captain), William Clews, ? , Harry Banks,
David Bell, Jim White, Mike McKinnell, Adam Wallace. The two ? marks were Alex Norrie and James Peters but
I am not certain if that is the correct order. A total of 235 fish 143lb 10oz were landed. England 64 - 38lb 7oz
Wales 64 - 38lb 1oz Scotland 53 - 34lb 15 1/2oz Ireland 54 - 32lb 2 1/2oz. Eric Campbell had the best fish 1lb
12 1/2oz.I fished in further matches in 1973 and 1974. Scotland were 2nd in 73 with 13 - 12lb 6oz and won in 74
with 9 - 8lb 7oz. Changed days!” Interesting to note the size and number of fish and how much harder the comp
was in later years. From all accounts, Mike, who is three times National Champion and netted 9 fish on Friday,
has not lost the touch.
