Western Angling Club (WAC) Two day event : Lintrathen
The (WAC) annual two day event took place last weekend 1st & 2nd of July 2011.
Location : Lintrathen Loch, Nr Blairgowrie, Angus.
An early start was required on Friday a min two-hour journey ahead on the water for 9.30 /10.00 am. Had packed the night before and was ready for the off, met up with Harvey (club secretary) nr Doune at 7.30, he offered to car share (in the works van) fine by me.
We were there in no time at all, apart from a wee glitch when the sat nav lost our position. It was a glorious morning hardly a breath of wind and blue skies, having met the rest of the guys we got our boats and were off.
Lintrathen is a beautiful water, nestled in some amazing countryside surrounded by rhododendrons interspersed with tall pines, it was like something out of a Disney cartoon the water was flat calm, reflections bouncing of it, with rings appearing on the water as fish broke the surface. Less than five minutes and Harvey is into a fine fish, after a good struggle he bags his first, and I thought "oh no here we go" Harvey is an excellent fisher having been a club member a long time his name is on all of our cups. He was using an intermediate 7-weight line and lures "orange" being a popular color for that water. I was using my Greys Platinum XD competition 7 weight 3pc rod and a floating line with 3 dry flies, specifically Sedgehogs, orange, purple and green/olive bodies. I cast my line out, my brother Christopher and his boat partner Roy Whitson were fishing close by, I mended and tugged my line, then pulled hard again and struck into a fish, I new it was big straight away, although out the corner of my eye I had a second glimpse of silver close by Harvey confirmed my suspicion when he stated that he thought I had two fish on, the first time that has happened to me, I’ve had two brownies on at the same time loads, after an amazing struggle unfortunately we only managed two net one.
We continued to fish the bay for a little longer however we had itchy feet and wanted to see more of the water after all we could see rings appearing all over the place, after a couple of moves we ended up in the smaller bay furthest away from the boat house, brown trout paradise only little but great fighters plus plenty of perch, lost a few before I got my touch and got a keeper about a 1lb.
Some sloe gins later a few glasses of wine and some nosh we were back at it. Harvey had talked about some secret bay where in the past he had some success so we made a bee line for it closely followed by my bro. It's been a while since i had fishing like that we all had a great afternoon, Chris weighed in 5 fish for 10lbs plus, Harvey 5 fish slightly less i got four bows and my brownie.
After weigh in we headed off to the hotel, the Glen Isla, unfortunately we got lost, we ended up on a forestry commission road, very bumpy, single track, and blind leading the bling, Bill Baird had followed us into the middle of nowhere, unfortunately just before we arrived at the end of the track Harvey cracked the sump on a big rock and lost all the oil from the engine. Bill had to go and get help while Harvey arranged for the AA.
Upon our arrival at the hotel Andy Murray was one set all in the Wimbledon quarter final with Nadal, having won the first set he then lost the rest as Nadal upped his game (shame)
Dinner for the guys was a big success however not for me I was exhausted having not slept well from the night before and all the fresh air and sun meant I started to get a head ache, I was in bed for 11.30 and couldn't sleep, Harvey who I was sharing with came in went to bed and instantly started to snore for Scotland, he's lucky to be alive! After what seemed an age I was very ill!
Next day. Up.. full breakfast feeling lively again, hell of the night before put behind me our newest member Murdo stepped in to help get myself and Harvey back to the water, stupidly I left my jacket in the hotel so Murdo did the decent thing and took me back as we were late we then fished together for the day, and a very enjoyable day we had. We began in the same place as the day before of course I was very much hoping to repeat the same performance with two fish on sadly however that wasn’t to be, we moved further up the water towards the island though there wasn’t much showing, I had gone to an intermediate line and after a short while tried a sinking line with a boobie on the tail followed by a couple of buzzers” the famous washing line effect”, though to no avail. Having given the main water a good thrash we decided to try through the gap as we approached we could see a few boats already in place, quietly we made our way in and found a spot in the right hand corner, the guys were already here and no sooner had we spotted Harvey and Donald Jnr than they were both playing fish! It did not take too long before I was into a fish and then a second I was now using yellow dancers, fire dancers and green and black nymphs on an intermediate line.
It was soon lunch time and we joined up with Alistair and Douglas we lashed the three boats together got out our food and wine and chatted about the morning, Donald Jnr already had nine fish, Harvey not far behind having given up netting fish for Donald Jnr he told us later, as that’s all he seemed to doing, during lunch the sky looked ominously dark however the day stayed dry and brightened up. A couple of other boats were in the same area and catching fish too. After a pleasant lunch we went back to action and action is what we got I had a further two Murdo got one and we both lost fish including loads of little brownies and perch.
Murdo, my boat partner mentioned that he was interested in getting a new rod and I suggested that he might like to try mine so we swapped, Murdo had a red fly on the tail, one l he had tied himself, I saw a fish and landed the fly right on it’s nose, it took fish on landed, sorry Murdo.
At the end of the day heading back to the boat house we were lucky enough to see the osprey again dive into the water and catch a fish, a truly awesome sight.
Donald Jnr won the day and the w/e with a staggering 27lb of fish, well done mate, I think it's safe to say that we'll be back next year, the Glen Isla hotel looked after us very well good food, good company, good service and at the right price.
