4. MARKLE (East Lothian) LATE REPORT TO FOLLOW
5. ORCHILL LOCH TROUT FISHERY It was a week of all weathers and temperatures in the one day - typical for Scotland. The depth of take has been varying slightly from on the top to just under the surface with a wide variety of flies. The Braco Bug was doing well for Jock Esplin catching him 3 fish for 12lbs 8oz with the best tipping the scales at 6lbs 8oz. The Falcon Club had a good morning on Sunday with Jim Colley winning with 5 fish for 13lbs on various flies.
Also doing well was Gavin Dunmair from Crieff with 2 rainbows weighing 4lbs and returning 9 brown trout on a dry Black Gnat, Joe Malcolmson, Cumbernauld, 3 for 8lbs on Buzzers, Hugh Bratchie, Lochgelly, 4 for 10lbs on an Orange Fritz, Ray Lovell, Tillicoultry, 3 for 8lbs on a Hot Head Damsel and George Austin, Errol, 4 for 10lbs on various Buzzers. 6. ORCHIL LOCH COARSE PONDS (Braco) The first of the Orchill Summer Series was fished last Sunday in rather windy conditions. 40 anglers fished the match and the match was won by Neil Chapman from Orchill Central with 32lbs 12oz from peg 48. Barry Morgan from Dunfermline was second with 31lbs 13oz, Davie Mathews, Orchill Central came third with 27lbs 9oz, Colin Skeel, Magiscroft, took fourth place with 26lbs 5oz and Colin Hart, Magiscroft, was fifth with 24lbs.Sixth place was taken by Mark Cook from Orchill Central with 22lbs 110z, John Baird Jnr., Magiscroft, had 22lbs 3oz and James Woodrow, Orchill Central, was eighth with 21lbs 6oz.
7. SWANSWATER (Stirling) Despite the wind and heavy showers this week, the water clarity remains excellent and fishing conditions are good. The wind has kept the fish down and most are being taken around three to four feet deep on the main pond with the more sheltered small ponds producing fish in the top foot of water except when it was really windy. Small lures and nymphs are still needed on Swanswater but a variety of wets and dries are working well on the Mill and Meadow Ponds. Amongst this week’s favourites were Dancer, Damsel, Cat’s Whisker, Hare’s Ear, Diawl Bach, Cormorant, Buzzer, Black Spider, Bibio and Kate McLaren. A few Brown trout were landed this week from Swanswater, also taken on small lures. The Swanswater Cygnets had a successful session on Sunday landing 9 fish from the Millpond in what were tricky conditions of cold swirling wind and heavy showers.
A word of warning to anglers – the crows around Swanswater are taking every chance to peck at any fish left lying unattended on the bank, even those in bags, so keep your catch close to you at all times!
The fishery is open 7 days a week, 8.00am to 10.00pm. There are no club bookings or competitions on this coming weekend (28 & 29 May).
Amongst this week’s successful anglers were Davy Quinn, Dunfermline, 2 for 10lb 4oz including 7lb Gold, Andy Henderson, Glasgow, 4 for 15lb including 6lb 8oz Rainbow, Danny Doherty, Denny, 7 for 22lb including 4lb Rainbow and 3 Blues, Willie Martin, Stirling, 7 for 20lb 4oz including a Brown and John Patrick, Kilsyth, 4 for 14lb 4oz including 5lb 8oz Blue. Darren Hill, Alva, 5 for 14lb including a Blue, Kimin Smith, Plean, 5 for 14lb, Frank Barr, Falkirk, in two visits, 10 for 25lb including a Blue and a Brown, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 4 for 11lb 4oz including a Brown and Anton Stephenson, Stirling, 3 for 10lb 8oz including 4lb 10oz Rainbow. Tom McAllister, Maryhill, 3 for 9lb 4oz including 2 Blues and a Brown, Iain MacDonald, Alva, 3 for 9lb including a Blue, George Kochanek, 2 for 6lb 12oz including a Blue and Andy Boyle, Stirling, 2 for 6lb 4oz including a Blue. Bill Johnston, Dunblane, 2 for 6lb 4oz, Sandy Ireland, Lochgoilhead, 2 for 6lb including a Blue, Mark Mercer, Alva, 3lb 8oz Brown and Scott Seath, Alva, 4lb 12oz.
8. LOCH VENACHAR (Trossachs) The fish seem to have got their appetites back with some fine pike and brown trout being caught in the last few weeks using a variety of techniques from dead-baiting, lures and also on the fly. The conditions at Venachar are still quite changeable (when are they not!) due to the “Spanish Plume” weather system which is throwing up a bit of everything after a mini-heatwave two weeks ago. The water-level has also dropped by a few feet due to the opening of the dam but this is not necessarily a bad thing as it opens up previously unfishable areas especially on the Invertrossachs side. There have also been some impressive boat catches with good trout numbers being caught at Portnellan where the Professor, Green Peter and the Gartmore Palmer flies seem to be doing the trick.
A solid 15lb 8oz pike was caught with a home-made perch fly by Alan Miller from Livingston and a powerful 18lb 9oz pike was caught lure fishing by Ross Watterson from Alloa. Paul Ferris from Cumbernauld also had an excellent day’s sport catching four pike, including a 16lb 8oz and a 15lb 10oz (the fish were returned unharmed after a small ransom was paid).
Some recent catches included David Stevenson (Dunfermline) 17lb - herring, Gary Batchelor (Edinburgh) 21lb 7oz, 18lb 8oz - brown trout, Ross Winwick (Edinburgh) 16lb 10oz - roach, Ross Watterson (Alloa) 18lb 9oz - lure, Darren Inglis (Stenhousemuir) 3 x 1lb 8oz brown trout on maggot and Steven & Kelsie Candlish (Dunfermline) 2lb 4oz brown trout on worms. Declan Graham (Paisley) had a 9lb 3oz pike on mackerel, Derren Reynolds (Inverkeithing) 19lb 10oz - lamprey, Ross Lamont 12lb - mackerel, Craig Sharpe (Falkirk) 2 x 1lb 2oz brown trout on maggot and David Mulholland (Falkirk) 2 x 1lb 4oz brown trout. Gary Attridge (Falkirk) 9lb 3oz - mackerel, Paul Ferris (Cumbernauld) 16lb 8oz, 15lb 10oz, 10lb 2oz, 9lb - mackerel & sardine, David Anderson (Paisley) 18lb 1oz – smelt and A. Morgan (Glenrothes) 2 x 1lb 8oz brown trout on fly.
